The message you want to write depends on who the card is for and what type of relationship you have with that person.
Is it a family member or a friend?
Chances are you don’t want to write the same message to your mom as you would to your best friend who you had a few drinks with last weekend or vice versa.
Are you close to the person or just know them well enough to give them a card?
